About

cropped-img_64282.jpgOne of my guiltiest pleasures(at this point I honestly don’t think it can even be considered  “guilty” anymore)  is Kpop, and when people find out the first words out of their mouths are usually along the lines of, “what’s that?”

To people who have never heard of K-pop or the Korean entertainment industry in general, at least my family, some friends, and roommates, they find it weird at the beginning…or the entire time. I’m sure they imagine me locked in my room, listening to music with lyrics I can’t understand (that’s why they have subtitles and translations), and obsessing over not just celebrities that will never know I exist but that live in a different country. This may not entirely be a lie, but I assure you I do leave my room to shower and take in sunlight every now and again so I don’t start to look like I’m related to Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

Although sometimes I do find it irritating when I’m asked if I’m, “…listening to  J-pop again, “(feel free to picture me rolling my eyes right about here) tumblr_nudknnUcYF1ueg5s6o1_500.png Yes K is clearly the same letter as J, honestly, do we need to go back to Kindergarten and relearn the alphabet? Another I hear quite often, “do you even know what they’re saying,” again we get back to the K in Kpop I’m not Korean, I don’t speak Korean but that does not in any way mean that I cannot enjoy it.

Over time this comment has come to bother me less.  Firstly  I find most people can’t argue that I am entitled to enjoy listening to music in whatever language I prefer, and if I want to read subtitles and watch a music video at the same time no one can stop me. Secondly, I’ve made some amazing friendships because of my interest in K-pop and Korean culture in general. For the most part, I’m a shy person and it takes a while for me to warm up, but I’ve gotten more confident thanks to my not so newfound love of Kpop and have used it to make connections with other Kpop fans. Thirdly, why should it matter to me if someone who might as well have their head stuck in a hole in the ground didn’t approve of my decisions in the choice of entertainment?

One of the main things that I plan to explain on this blog is that there are more foreign fans, including Americans, that enjoy K-pop just as much as I do it’s just not something that ever really gets talked about. Also, the influence that the Korean entertainment industry and many other foreign entertainment industries have started to influence the trends in America. Believe it or not but countries are taking in different music, movie & television, fashion,  Skin & beauty, food, and so many other trends in such a short span of time.img_6420

K-pop speaks for itself. Some people find K-pop to be to fabricated and flashy, but because I have a problem and decided I need to know all about K-pop, I also know that Idols, as K-pop stars are called, and groups may not be formed spontaneously but that doesn’t mean that these musicians don’t do anything.  The idols work endlessly to achieve the best possible results for the public, some struggle with new surroundings and can go years without seeing their families. One thing I know for sure is that I love K-pop, and even when people can’t understand why I get so excited by just hearing someone mentioning it, I know that there are a lot of people just like me out in the world, we even have our own

One thing I know for sure is that I love K-pop, and even when people can’t understand why I get so excited by the mere mentioning of it, I know that there are a lot of people just like me out in the world, we wouldn’t have our own apps if there wasn’t a large enough audience. I remember being lectured in my elementary music class (thanks, Mrs. Sims never thought I’d say you were right) about how music brings people from all walks of life together, but now I really get it because with K-pop I get to be a part of it. I may not be Korean or an Idol but I am part of the wave.
